Curriculum

Education State Targets

Preston South Primary School is committed to promoting and developing  the state education targets:

  • Learning for Life: More students achieving excellence in reading, maths, science, critical and creative thinking and the arts.
  • Happy, Healthy and Resilient Kids: Building the resilience of our children, and encouraging them to be more physically active.
  • Breaking the Link: Ensuring more students stay in school and breaking the link between disadvantage and outcomes for students.
  • Pride and Confidence in our Schools Making sure every community has access to excellence, in every government school and classroom.

Teachers at Preston South Primary School plan their curriculum to cater for these diversities in their classrooms by using a variety of assessment tools, different learning and teaching strategies, ideas and teaching materials so that all students can learn effectively, regardless of differences in ability.

Differentiation in the classroom can be recognised in a variety of ways:

  • carefully monitoring student progress to inform teaching
  • using appropriate assessment
  • setting clear goals, specific learning intentions and achievement criteria
  • providing appropriate focused learning and teaching time selecting appropriate learning and teaching strategies
  • providing various opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning with what they can ‘Do, Say, Make or Write’
  • providing students with opportunities to monitor and track their learning with self-assessment
  • organising student groups with like needs
  • developing individual learning plans (if required).

At Preston South Primary School assessment is integral to the teaching and learning cycle. Teachers use the evidence from assessment to provide feedback to the learner and to adapt the learning program in response to the learner's needs.

Our assessment schedule is appropriately paced throughout the school year, allowing teachers to continually identify each child’s learning point of need. This allows us to scaffold learning experiences to support the individual needs of every child. We measure learning achievement against continuums of learning that informs us of where to next for each child’s learning goal. Our focus of creating personalised learning is supported by using the ongoing information gathered from assessment that monitors and measures learning achievement, and to set learning goals for our students. Providing feedback and reflection to our students are an integral part of our teaching pedagogy.

victorian curriculum

The Victorian Curriculum F–10 incorporates the Australian Curriculum and reflects Victorian priorities and standards. The Victorian Curriculum F–10 sets out what every student should learn during their first eleven years of schooling. The curriculum is the common set of knowledge and skills required by students for life-long learning, social development and active and informed citizenship. See the VCAA Website for further details.
